Narcan is an over-the-counter medication used to rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. It works by displacing opioids from receptors in the brain and restores normal breathing within 2-3 minutes.
Narcan can be administered not only by first responders but by family and bystanders. It is mostly administered as a nasal spray.
Narcan won’t harm someone if given when they are not overdosing; however, it will cause sudden onset of withdrawal symptoms in an opioid dependent person. It is important to note that Narcan is safe for all ages including children and Infants.
